Jelle
When Jelle was 3 his left eye turned inward and he became very
cross-eyed. Initially his right eye was covered, in the hope of
activating the left eye. He was given glasses and by the time he
was 9 his prescription was R+3.75D and L+3.5D.
He was due to have an eye operation in the summer of 2002 because
he was seeing double. However at the last check-up before the operation,
the eye doctor who was going to operate on him said his eye wasn't
stable so the operation was postponed.
During that summer his family were travelling through the US for
3 months and Jelle lost his glasses. They were desperate, he didn't
have a second pair and they were a long way from a city where they
could order a new pair. After 2 days it looked like he could manage
without his glasses, at least he wasn't seeing double all the time.
His mother started teaching him the Bates method from a 1960's book.
Within 2 weeks his eye was straight 90% of the time. And he was
able to correct it, by means of a simple exercise, the rest of the
time. He hasn't worn glasses since, his eyes are straight almost
all of the time now, except when he is very tired. The last measurement
(March 2003) showed R+0,75D, L+1.25. He is still improving.
