Natural Vision Books

Over 50 books have been published on natural vision improvement and a small selection are listed below.

Reading one of these books is a good way to start your vision improvement. However it is easier to learn from personal instruction so it is worth considering attending a workshop.

Title / Author Comments

Better Eyesight Without Glasses

W.H. Bates

Dr. William Bates is the ophthalmologist who discovered and developed the methods of natural eyesight improvement. He taught many thousands of people to improve their eyesight. He first published a version of this book in 1920 and this is a revised edition.

It is an interesting but fairly difficult read. Some of the more modern books may be a better starting point.

Help Yourself to Better Sight

Margaret D. Corbett

Margaret Corbett trained with Dr. Bates in 1930 and was a very successful teacher and teacher trainer. One of her famous students was the author Aldous Huxley.

This is a good book but written in an old fashioned style.

The Art of Seeing

Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley suffered from a serious eye condition and was going blind, at one stage he needed Braille to read. His eyesight improved using natural vision techniques and he wrote this book as a result.

Natural Vision Improvement

Janet Goodrich

Janet Goodrich applied modern thinking to the Bates method and this is a good modern Bates book.

She has also written books specifically for improving children's eyesight.

Relearning To See

Thomas R. Quackenbush

Thomas Quackenbush trained with Janet Goodrich and has spent many years studying the work of Bates and subsequent teachers.

This book is a very comprehensive guide, and contains all the information that you could ever want to know about Natural Vision. It is an excellent book, but at 520 pages it is a bit daunting. If you get a copy I would suggest starting with sections 3 and 4.

Improve Your Eyesight

Jonathan Barnes

Jonathan Barnes has a background in biology, and, although initially sceptical, improved his own eyesight using the Bates method.

This book will appeal to those who are scientifically inclined, and explains in some detail why the traditional theories about vision might be flawed. It gives a good explanation of the basic Bates techniques, and has a selection of eye charts that can be used for practise. The style is a bit dry, so it may not appeal to everyone.

Better Eyesight

The complete magazines of William H. Bates

Thomas R. Quackenbush

Bates presented much of his work in Better Eyesight magazines published between 1919 and 1930.

This book is a compilation of all these magazines, and has been edited and indexed by Thomas Quackenbush.

It is an excellent source for anyone wanting to study Bates's original work and views. The magazines contain hundreds of success stories of people with a wide variety of vision problems.
